Ride the Dixiana!
When Roaring Camp offered us the opportunity to film a cab ride in Shay No. 1, the Dixiana, of course we jumped at the chance! Though there are several serviceable steam locomotives in the Roaring Camp engine house, Shay No. 1 is probably the one most identifiable with this railroad.
In order to do justice to the experience, we took three cameras with us. John rode in the cab behind the engineer, filming out the front window and recording quite a bit of informative commentary by the engine crew. Dan perched on top of the fuel bunker on the fireman's side with a tripod and alternated between filming down into the cab and shooting over the roof. Lastly, we custom-fabricated our own camera mount and clamped a third camera to the running board above the steam cylinders.
We were privileged to be able to ride this historic locomotive and get a perspective of the Roaring Camp & Big Trees that most people never get to see. The edited video chronicles the entire trip up and down the mountain in real time, using footage from all three cameras. If you've ever wondered what it's like up front in the cab of a working steam locomotive, this is your chance to find out!
